Man and Van in London
A sofa from a shop in Peckham, a studio flat in Camden, a student room in Mile End. When a full removal crew is too much, a van and a pair of careful hands is the right job.
- Single items and small moves
- Furniture shop collections
- Blankets and straps carried
- Help with lifting
Our man and van service is a van with one or two movers who load, drive and unload for you. It suits studio and one-bedroom flats, students, single pieces of furniture, marketplace purchases and loads going in or out of storage. The van carries blankets, straps and a sack truck, and the mover helps with the lifting rather than watching from the cab. You get a written quote first, based on what you are moving, where from and where to.
What fits in the van
The usual van for this service is a Luton, the kind with a box body and often a tail lift. It holds the contents of a typical studio or a small one-bedroom flat: a bed, a sofa, a wardrobe, a table and chairs, and the boxes that go with them. For a single item or a few boxes we can send a smaller panel van.
The best way to get it right is to send us a list, or a few photos of each room. People nearly always underestimate how many boxes their kitchen and bathroom turn into. If it looks like a squeeze, we would rather tell you now and send a bigger van than have you making a second trip at the end of the day.
When man and van is the wrong choice
A family home is not a man and van job. Once you have several bedrooms, wardrobes that need taking apart and a loft full of boxes, you want a full crew with the right van and a planned day. Trying to squeeze it into a man and van booking means more trips, a longer day and more chance of damage.
Very heavy or awkward items need the same caution. Pianos, safes, large American fridge-freezers and stone garden tables need more people and the right equipment. A long, narrow staircase with no lift can also tip the balance. If anything on your list falls into this group, we will say so and quote for a house removal instead. It is cheaper than a hernia.
What you get with a man and van
-
A mover who lifts
Helps load and unload, not just drive. If you want a second mover for a heavy piece, ask.
-
Blankets and straps
Furniture is wrapped and strapped in the van, so nothing slides around on the way.
-
Shop and marketplace pickups
We can collect from a furniture shop, a warehouse or a seller's home and bring it straight to you.
-
Storage runs
Loads taken in or out of a storage unit, whether it is ours or someone else's.
-
Dismantling on request
Flat-pack beds and wardrobes taken apart and put back together if you ask when you book.
-
A written quote first
Based on your list or photos, so you know what the job covers before you agree to it.
What affects the cost of man and van
We do not publish prices, because no two jobs are the same. Your written quote is worked out from these things:
- The size of van needed for what you are moving
- One mover or two
- Stairs, lifts and how far the van can park from the door
- The distance between collection and delivery
- Waiting time at shops or on a key handover
- Dismantling and reassembling furniture
Man and Van questions
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do. Send us the seller's address, a photo of the item and its rough size. Check with the seller that it will come out of their door the way it went in. If they are on a top floor with no lift, tell us, because that may mean sending two movers rather than one.
No. With one mover, we may ask you to help guide a large piece round a tight corner, but never to carry the heavy end. If something genuinely needs two people and you have booked one mover, we will tell you before the day and suggest adding a second, rather than turning up and expecting you to take the weight.
Please ask when you book. Whether there is a free seat depends on the van and on how many movers are coming. Many customers prefer to travel separately anyway so they can get to the new place first and open up. If you are going by public transport, tell the mover so they know who will be there to let them in.
Yes. Halls often have strict rules on when vans can use the loading area and how long they can stay, especially at the end of term when everyone is leaving at once. Check those rules with your accommodation office first and tell us. Boxes and bags packed and sealed before the van arrives make the whole thing far quicker.
